Style guides
I wrote Chapter 1, "Microsoft voice and style," and Chapter 2, "Content for the web," of the Microsoft Manual of Style, 4th Ed., which is more commonly known as the Microsoft Style Guide for Technical Publications (MSTP).
I created the style guidelines for the first version of the Windows 8 Store and the guidelines for the first support videos included with Windows 7.
Copywriting
I worked on the promotional copy for apps featured in the first release of the Windows Store that debuted in Windows 8.
I performed several levels of edit to the product feature guides used by Marketing as the basis for their campaign messaging for Windows 7, 8, and 10, and also for Internet Explorer 8, 9, and 10.
Technical
I performed all levels of edit to technical content created for the AWS Security Blog. Topics often cover subjects such as access and identity management, encryption, directory services, external security services, and compliance.
In my first role at Microsoft, I wrote or performed various levels of edit to technical manuals and guides for a team that was trying to help businesses migrate to Microsoft technologies. Here are a few examples:
Chapter 2, Authentication and Authorization in UNIX and Windows Environments, from the Microsoft Solution Guide for Windows Security and Directory Services for UNIX
Microsoft Java Virtual Machine Migration Guide for Developers
At my first job in the tech field at LSI Logic, Inc., I wrote, edited, and maintained several versions of administration and reference guides, release notes, and white papers for a UNIX-based file and print server product.
UI text
To address the problem of customers delaying updates to their Windows 10 PCs, I wrote text to make customers aware of the value of installing updates. This PPT file shows the before/after.
I edited text for thousands of user interactions in over 50 features, apps, error states, and more in Windows and its related services. Here are editing samples for a few Windows features during PowerPoint wireframe development: System Protection Control Panel, User Account Control, System Control Panel, and SmartScreen filter.
Support
I conceived, designed, wrote the text, and created the art for the Windows Quick Start Guides that are still in use and have been updated since I left Microsoft. Here’s a link to the original version of a general introduction to Microsoft Edge.
That project originated from a need to address the information worker audience that we had underserved up to that point. I wrote a few guides specifically for this audience: getting the most out of the desktop at work, finding a network printer, and bringing your own device to work.
I've written support content for many features over multiple releases of Windows, including for Windows Media Player, accounts, device drivers, displays, the Music app, Video app, updating and upgrading, and so on. Here's an online help topic about getting started with Windows Media Player, and here's an FAQ about codecs.
Strategic planning
I’ve been responsible for researching, writing, and advocating for many strategic initiatives in my former and current roles. I can’t share this work publicly, but reach out to me and I’m happy to discuss the work at a high level.
